The Professional Footballer’s Association (PFA) is the world’s oldest professional sports trade union and has in excess of 5,000 members. The PFA purpose is to protect players’ rights, represent their views and provide support through a wide variety of educational, financial and wellbeing services amongst others.
For some members, being a professional footballer will fulfil their dreams and aspirations whilst ensuring they are financially secure and enjoy a comfortable life once their playing days are over. However, for the vast majority, including scholars, the reality that football is a beautiful but very short-lived game is evidently clear. Therefore, the support of the PFA both during and after a player’s career is crucial. The need for players to engage in a new career once their full-time professional career has finished can and typically is hugely daunting and overwhelming.
The job market both within football and outside of football is fiercely competitive. With unemployment rates being as low as 4.9% and job vacancies exceeding 1m in September 2021 (according to ONS.gov) you would expect that members should have very little issue or reason to require support in obtaining a new job and an exciting ‘2nd’ career. However, the majority of the vacancies stated, pay between £8.38 to £13.55 per hour and is below the average paid salary for UK workers (£14.45).
Therefore, in order to give the member’s the optimum opportunity to secure an exciting career and prosperous future, the need to educate, upskill and give them the tools within ‘their locker’ in order to be interview and job ready is critical and the PFA in partnership with Next Season can play a critical and key role in achieving this.
